Homage to ‘Gypsy’

I once drew a huge 3 meter high drawing of a Flamenco dancer in compressed charcoal on paper. The piece was originally made in 1998, during the second year of my BA. It was a dynamic linear display of dancing in full flight, influenced by the aesthetics of artists such as Christo, Marcel Duchamp as well as David Bomberg.

Someone just recently commissioned me to make a much smaller version (around 1 meter 50 cm high).

This is no easy task, and I had my serious doubts, but the process of making the newer artwork has been most rewarding; retraining myself into an old way of working, reminiscing and revisiting the mindset (at the tender age of 48) of my 21 year old self!

The more sepia image gives a fair idea of the original piece; (digital cameras in those days were not as powerful as they are now). The black and white high resolution snap, is of it’s much newer version, completed only a few days ago….
